  • External Pressure

QUESTION:  I am managing a team with a high number of non work related problems.  I seem to spend a lot of my time supporting them with these issues.

ANSWER:  You need to ensure that you are taking care of yourself and not trying to carry the burden of these problems.  The best support you can offer your staff is in your capacity as a manager.  You may need to make short term adjustments (ask people what you could do, as a manager, to help them).  Do not be tempted to try and act as a counsellor – refer staff to Workplace Wellness if they need emotional support.

QUESTION:  A member of my team has problems at home and is struggling to cope.  I really want to help and support but I don't feel qualified….I’m worried I may make the situation worse.

ANSWER:  You are not expected or required to be a counsellor, that is what your EAP service provides.  Your role is to notice there is a need and to create an opportunity to chat with your team member and to offer support and information about the EAP services in a safe and confidential environment.  You should ensure that the individual understands the full range of Workplace Wellness services,  that he/she can ring our helpline about any type of problem large or small and that the service is free, confidential and available 24/7 - and that there is counselling for those that feel that is the most helpful way forward.  As a Manager you can also refer a team member for counselling support by ringing the helpline number yourself on their behalf, so long as the team member has given permission for you to do so.

If you have a line management problem you are struggling with - confidential and independent help is at hand.  Call 0800 111 6385 and you will soon be talking with one of our experienced Counsellors, who will help you formulate a solution and a way of handling the issue with which you feel comfortable and confident will work.
